Leonard Nimoy passed away today.
A long time ago (and I won't complete the Star Wars phrase since it wouldn't be right when discussing a Star Trek icon), I had the privledge of photographing Leonard Nimoy when I worked as the photographer for the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). I don't have a record of the exact date of this, but it was around 1991. Although he was obviously best known for his work on Star Trek, he wasn't there to promote any of that, but instead, was promoting a TV movie called "Never Forget". The topic of the movie was the holocaust. The TV show that FCPS was producing was a way to bring that topic to students and other viewers.
In the short time that I spent with Nimoy, he struck me as a humble person with a sense of humor. I remember him commenting that he was never in love with his acting role in Star Trek, but he had done very well by it and wasn't complaining! His goal in being in "Never Forget" was exactly as the title stated, to never forget the holocaust so that nothing like it would be repeated. These words were true then and they are even more true today with many situations of violence and hatred we see going on around the world.
I hope you enjoy seeing these photos of Leonard Nimoy in a little different light.
I can't remember everyone in the above photo, but to our right of Nimoy is Robert Radnitz, the movie's producer. Ron Axlerod, who was the FCPS teacher of the year at that time, is on our far right.
The photographs in the background are scenes from the movie.
Here's an IMDB link about the movie: Never Forget
